Booking the Adventure

To kick off this incredible journey, I decided to book the sleeper train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Booking was a breeze through 12go.com, and I opted for a 2nd class AC sleeper cabin. The price tag of approximately $23 certainly caught my attention, especially when compared to last-minute flight options that could easily set you back around $120.

Aboard the Train

As I boarded the train, I was met with a delightful surprise: the choice between top and bottom bunks in the sleeper cabin. The spaciousness of the bottom bunk with its window view seemed like the perfect choice initially. However, unlike train experiences in the UK, specific beds are assigned, prompting a move to my designated, albeit smaller, top bunk. It was a bit of a puzzle to fit myself and my luggage, but the charm of the journey quickly overshadowed any inconvenience.

Departure was around 8pm, and as the train gently rolled along, I began to explore what the journey had to offer.

The Food

Exploring the train revealed a dining carriage, though the options were not exactly gourmet. Opting for a safer choice, I settled for spring rolls, which, unfortunately, came with an unexpected side dish – a fly under the cucumber. It was a humorous reminder that journeys like these come with their own unique quirks.

Challenges and Comfort

While the experience was novel, I did face a few challenges. The train's restroom was not the most fragrant, to say the least. I quickly learned the value of pre-travel bathroom breaks to avoid the rather unpleasant necessity of using the onboard facilities.

One highlight was the opportunity to catch up on editing work during the journey. Though power outlets were scarce, I managed to locate a couple near the restroom and the conductor's area. Thankfully, cell phone service was available for most of the route, keeping me connected.

Scenic Surprises

The true magic of the journey unveiled itself at dawn. As I awoke at 6am to the chattering of fellow travelers, I seized the chance to explore the train and witness the breathtaking scenery outside. Lush landscapes and charming villages passed by, providing an authentic and immersive experience that only train travel can offer.

Arrival and Beyond

After a series of stops, I reached Surat Thani, albeit a bit behind schedule. To continue the island adventure to Koh Phangan, Koh Samui, or Koh Tao, a taxi or shuttle to the ferry dock is needed. Upon arrival, I found a plethora of travel companies offering onward tickets to the islands, complete with shuttle service to the ferry docks. For approximately 450 Thai Baht (around $12), I secured a seamless transfer to the ferry and a ticket to Koh Phangan.
